SEAMS Employee Supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind

SEAMS Account Manager Jon Greensill and his Family have signed up to help the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association by joining their official puppy walking scheme. Their first assignment has now been delivered in the form of a black labrador called Valdez. Jon will keep us updated on progress throughout the year.

So Dog 1 has arrived and as anyone will know who’s had a new puppy, or baby for that matter, it’s a routine changing event. I expect for the next few weeks the family schedule will revolve around the sleeping, eating, and other habits of Valdez, our trainee guide dog. A few days in and all seems well so far, although shoes and socks already seems to be a prime target for abuse by some very sharp teeth.

Valdez - Week 1

The process of becoming a puppy walker has taken several months to complete. As well as the inevitable paperwork there have been several home visits and a fact finding mission to one of the national training centres. We probably underestimated the size of the ‘instruction manual’ that the dog comes with which runs to several volumes and DVDs. It’s a physical reminder that although we will all enjoy raising a young puppy we have a job to do to give this dog the best chance of going on to be an effective guide dog.  Some simple rules that you might not think of at first are all there for good reason. For example, he’s not allowed to play with any toy balls. Seems a shame but then you realise that when he is guiding his eventual owner any temptation to chase things down the street would be a bit of a problem.

Valdez will live with us for 12 months after which time he will be taken back into kennels to complete several months of more intensive training. Not all dogs make it, but those that don’t meet the standard for assisting blind people are often used in other schemes such as dogs for the disabled. Although I can already tell that we will be sad to see him go we know it’s for a good cause and, all things being well, he will get replaced by Dog 2 and off we will go again. That’s a long way off for now and the family, furniture, and footwear have all got to survive Dog 1 first. I’ll keep you posted.
